Politicians Holiday?

9

People hate politicians, but critical thinking and objective reality says they’re important people doing a thankless job. Whether you’re a democrat or republican; conservative or liberal, we all owe politicians a debt of gratitude for their patriotism and dedication. While the masses and media will continue to criticize and attact politicians 24/7, world-class thinkers should rise above this fear based bullying and recognize these important public servants. I propose an international holiday, beginning in the United States and hopefully spreading throughout the world, to celebrate and pay tribute to politicians of every party and philosophy. Please listen to this 6-minute audio post and weigh in with your thoughts. I’ll look forward to your comments.

‘Empower Them Through Work’

Outlook India

08 Mar 2010

On the 35th anniversary of International Women’s Day, founder of India’s 1.2 million-strong SEWA (Self Employed Women’s Association) trade union Elah Bhatt reflects on the obstacles that remain to women’s equality.

‘Our country rightly is proud of its democracy and its diversity. We must make sure that everyone has the chance to succeed, whatever their caste, gender or background.’

India is undergoing enormous change. In a very short time, many Indians have become much richer, and our country is now often described as a “world player” economically and politically. Despite this transformation, our rich history, culture and traditions rightly remain important. Indeed, our success rests on this potent combination of the old and the new.

Journey to the Arctic Circle (7 photographs)

© All photographs by Yassine Ouhilal

Yassine Ouhilal captures surfer Cheyne Cottrell riding an icy wave amidst the snow-capped mountains of Norway’s Arctic. This shot was taken around 11 PM due to the high latitude and prevailing midnight sun.

Photographer Yassine Ouhilal, known as “Yazzy,” recently traveled to Norway’s Arctic Circle for a surfing expedition feature with Outside magazine. In Norway, Yazzy was also able to shoot for Eddie Bauer, who sponsored the trip. He produced a documentary while traveling that is posted on YouTube, and which has been seen in 200 countries.

Following a custom in surfing culture, Pat Millin named this “spot” Whitmills after he became the first surfer to ride a wave at this location.

Aurora Borealis in Northern Norway.

This memorial for Canadian Folk Artist, Maud Lewis, is made of stainless steel sheets with lights shining from within.

Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajokull, Iceland, photographed from the air.

The dark rocks and vegetation of Iceland’s interior absorb heat, unlike ice and snow, which would normally reflect it back to the atmosphere. This is a contributing factor in the increased global temperatures.

The glacier’s last dance: giant icebergs flow into the lagoon and go out to sea where the action of waves, saltwater, and sun ultimately play the final note.
