Mammoth Snowstorm
Sep/090
Photographed at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, California.
Bruce Benedict explains that his image is a composite of two shots made with a Canon 5D Mark II, 16mm lens, and tripod.
Long Exposure: 15 sec., f4.0, ISO 50.
Exposure for flakes: 5 sec., f4.0, ISO 50, with a flash firing to capture the flakes.
Benedict used Photoshop to lift the flakes out of one shot and add them to the long exposure and soften the background a bit. He adds:
“The Mammoth is a statue at the base of Mammoth Mountain Ski Area in Mammoth Lakes, California. I made the image while spending the week skiing there with my family in April. I badly underestimated how quickly fingers freeze in a wet snowstorm at night, even in April! I thought I’d just make a quick snap or two, and then got rather carried away – finally leaving when I got too cold to continue.”
