One Year on Kythera

Backed by a 2004 J. William Fulbright grant, New York-based photographer Kristina Williamson spent over a year on the Greek island of Kythera. Emigration away from the island has left many homes vacant or abandoned. The project examined the interactions between tradition and modernization among those who continue to live in Kythera. Király Street, Budapest, 1929

Photo by Imre Kinszky. This 1929 photograph shows Király Street, a main thoroughfare in one of Budapest's biggest Jewish neighborhoods. Kinszky, a Modernist Hungarian photographer, disappeared during the Holocaust.
This image is part of “How They Lived: The Daily Life of Hungarian Jews in Photographs, 1867-1940,” a special photography exhibition now open at the the 92nd Street Y in New York. The photographs provide rare insights into the everyday lives of Hungarian Jews before World War II. One tenth of Holocaust victims were Hungarian Jews—a total of 550,000 people.

The exhibition is presented in conjunction with Extremely Hungary, a yearlong festival of Hungarian arts and culture in New York and Washington, D.C.

Biography
Deborah L. Wince-Smith became president of the Council on Competitiveness in December 2001. She is an internationally recognized expert on science and technology policy, innovation strategy, technology commercialization, and global competition. Ms. Wince-Smith serves as corporate chair and director of several high technology companies as well as on boards, committees, and policy councils of numerous national nonprofit organizations, including the University of Chicago Board of Governors for Argonne National Laboratory, the Council of the Woodrow Wilson Center, the University of California Review Committees for Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories, the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, the Pilgrims of the United States, and the International Women’s Forum. Most recently, Ms. Wince-Smith was appointed by the Secretary of Energy to be a member of the Secretary’s Task Force on the Future of Science Programs. She is a trustee of the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
A Senior Fellow at the Council since 1993, Ms. Wince-Smith served as the first Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy in the Department of Commerce Technology Administration from 1989 to 1993. In that capacity, she developed technology policies and national initiatives to strengthen U.S. productivity and economic competitiveness. She served on White House policy councils, chaired the Interagency Committee on Federal Technology Transfer, and directed the President’s National Technology Initiative. She was also the U.S. representative to the multilateral Intelligent Manufacturing Systems Consortium with government and private sector leaders from the U.S., Europe, Japan, and Canada.
During the Reagan Administration, Ms. Wince-Smith served as the Assistant Director for International Affairs and Competitiveness in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. As a Program Manager at the National Science Foundation from 1976-1984, she managed U.S. research programs with Eastern European countries and U.S. universities.
Trained as a classical archaeologist, Ms. Wince-Smith graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude from Vassar College and received her master’s degree from King’s College, Cambridge University. She is a frequent speaker at conferences and symposia and an author on technology policy and innovation.

Mr. Phillips is credited with launching the PDA, Cable Modem, Fixed Cellular, Time Magazine’s Medical Invention of the Year- the VeinViewer, and the world’s largest provider of digital imaging infrastructure for the internet, in such areas as online real estate, auction listings, and classified ads.
Throughout his business career, Jim has held numerous prominent positions and has founded and co-founded many successful corporations. He was formerly Vice President of Nortel Networks; President & Co-Founder of SkyTel – the nation’s largest messaging company; President & Vice Chairman of Telular Corp.; Corporate Vice President and General Manager of Motorola, PCS and Multimedia divisions, where his team invented the cable modem. He was instrumental in the development of the wireless local loop cellular voice and data telephone, alarm and telemetry systems.
Mr. Phillips served as Senior Vice-President of Marketing of Mobilecomm, the second largest provider of cellular and paging services in the U.S.
Jim also Co-Founded iPIX Corporation where he served as Chairman and CEO. During his tenure with iPIX, he led the company to become what Forbes called “the Kodak of the Internet.” The company revolutionized imaging across the internet, inventing virtual tours that are a staple on real estate, hotel & entertainment websites and the only 360×360 security camera system used by the White House and many government agencies and corporations. In addition, through the acquisition of Bamboo.com and Picture Works, Jim oversaw the development of the popular image submission process utilized by millions of e-Bay users everyday.
He also holds patents in cell phones, PDA and data modem design.
Mobilecomm Corporation was sold to BellSouth Corporation, SkyTel Corporation was sold to MCI Worldcomm, and iPIX was sold to Sony Corporation.
While furthering his management career in the financial sector, Mr. Phillips served as CEO in Residence and Special Advisor to the Private Equity and Investment Banking Groups at Morgan Keegan & Co.
As Founding Chairman and Executive Director of the FedEx Institute of Technology (FIT), he helped establish this leading research park on the campus at the University of Memphis. Information Week called FIT “the technology industry’s newest center for innovation” and WIRED Magazine compared it to Media Lab and MIT.
Jim also founded and served as Chairman and CEO of Snowflake Corporation – a leader in biometric identification.
In 2004, Jim was named one of Information Week’s Innovators of the Year. That same year, he became Chairman and CEO of Luminetx Corporation and led the development and commercialization of a breakthrough medical device called the “VeinViewer” Time Magazine named this milestone the “coolest medical invention of year” and Red Herring Magazine featured Luminetx Corporation at the top of the list of North America’s 100 Best Technology Startups in 2006.
Among his many honors and awards, Jim was named Tennessee Businessman of the Year in 1999 by the U.S. Small Business Administration. In 2006, he was inducted into the Memphis Entrepreneurial Society. His innovative contributions and business leadership have been chronicled in many national publications including: Forbes, Fortune, Business Week, The Standard, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and USA Today. He has made numerous appearances on Fox News, CNN, CNNfn, CNBC, the BBC and CBS Morning News.
